PROBLEMS AND PROSPECT OF GARRI TO THE EYES
Garri is obtained by processing cassava tubers. cassava tuners contain large quantities of a toxin called Cyanide which was placed by nature to ward off animals from attacking the plant. when cassava is properly processed and subjected to heat to make fufu or eba, most of this cyanide toxin is destroyed but when it is mixed with cold water to sip/drink, the body is exposed to large amounts of cyanide. it does nit immediately affect the eyes but when taken over a long time, the cyanide accumulates in the system and causes problems
cyanide suppresses the availability of Vitamin A to the eyes which causes disturbances in retinal function whocih over a long time, it will lead to blurring of Vision.
visual disturbance and possibly blindness, Cyanide is similar in structure to Vitamin B12 and it competes to suppress the intake of this vitamin which is necessary for the growth/function of nerve of vision (optic nerve)
Cyanide inhibits intake of iodine by a gland in your neck called the Throid gland and this might lead to hyperthyrodism which will eventually harm the eyes.
Cyanide also impedes the free movement of aqueous humour in the eyes which is responsibe for supplying nutrient to all part of the eyes
The common pathway of all this is Visual disturbance and subsequent blindness.
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
- Reduce the frequency of drinking garri, its safer to make it into Eba because the heat destroys most of the Cyanide
- 2. Take fortified garri. This can be found in shopping malls. Fortified garri comes with Vitamin A
- Takes Foods that are ricj in Vitamin A and B12. Foods rich in vitamin A include Beef Liver, Cod Liver oil, Fish, Butter, Cheese etc. (Penking, 2022)
