WAYS OF MASTERING ENGLISH TENSES IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

English language, our colonial heritage is not a foreign language in Nigeria. It is the language of the government. The language which connects various ethnic group in Nigeria together.

It is a Childs second or first language in Nigeria. A child who speaks his mother tongue first before acquiring English language, English is that child second language. Also, in a family where English language is spoken freely, a child speaks English language first before acquiring any other language. Therefore English is that child first language.

The yardstick with which an average Nigeria measures the standard of education in Nigeria is English language. When you hear people say; the standard of education has fallen in Nigeria they mean school; graduates are no longer able to speak English language flawlessly.

It is not annoying to hear an institution graduate saying my mother has went out? Or, “I did not saw them when the y came? Or I have not seen my wallet? There was an occasion when the chief speaker said they cannot do it without the slightest compunction that he had dropped a clangor in such occasion.

The examples I have given are but a tip of iceberg. The mistakes in such expressions arise from incorrect use of tenses. The project seeks to show tenses can be effectively mastered by secondary school students.

A long neglect of teaching of when to use a particular tense and how to construct the tenses at primary and secondary schools levels have dismal effects in attaining excellence in English by school graduates at all level education.

Most secondary school English language texts merely present English tenses and their aspects use of tenses, which is the bone of attaining excellence in Nigeria language.

The purpose of this project is to offer how tenses can be effectively mastered by secondary school students so as to be able to speak and write correct English.

This study will also make the English language teacher to be aware of how tenses could be mastered by students learning English as a second language. The study will enable students to use English language correctly and to attain proficiency in the language.

Statement of the Study The student lack of mastery of tenses has led to their poor use of English and the study intends show that unless they are properly taught by the English teachers and effectively mastered by students they will not able to communicate effectively in English language
