FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR POOR PERFORMANCE IN LITERATURE IN ENGLISH IN NIGERIA SECONDARY SCHOOLS

CHAPTER ONE

 INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

The chamber’s English dictionary: – defines literature as “the art of composition in prose and verse in any language or a given subject’. Malcolin Ross (2001) refers to literature as aspects of poetry and prose. Its medium is language which in everyday use is concerned with parts and opinions. According to her, literature can be used to increase knowledge about things and people and it can be used as a ground for moral discussion. She said “ there is no reason why is should not be so as long as we do not pretend that we think, in that particular exercise, that we are discussing literature as art. Literature projects the image of life in the mood of virtual memory. Language is its essential materials, the sound and meaning of words, their familiar or unusual use and order. Even their presentation on the printed page, creates the vision of life as a realm of events completed lived as words formulated them and events that compose a past. As literature creates a virtual past drama creates a virtual future. The literary mode is made of memory; the drama is the mode of dating. All teachers including teachers of the art (literature) are required to specify attainments at various stages in students’ progress and also to articulate their criteria of assessments.

However, the language of art (literature) despite their complexity and variety are not in principal beyond classification and it’s this task of classification that would wish philosophers and teachers now and now and urgently to address themselves upon the success of their efforts. The future are viability of the art in the new curriculum might very well depend says David Aspin (1999), Victor Hen form in the same book argued “in judging the children’s work, leader assessor have to be interrelationship between distinctive personal vision and standards of general artistic competence, the following scholars also lent their weight in the issue and agued this; Harold Osborne (2004), of whilst aesthetic assessment itself has to be a total and unified art of percipience criticism must address particular and discrete issue if appreciation is a synthesizing process, criticism requires the practices of analysis. He proposes three grounds for aesthetic criticism.

  1. In term of subject matters personal vision of conception
  2. In terms of artistic exechnical accomplishment
  3. In terms of an object capacity for sustained enriching percipience itself.

Malcolm Ross (2000, argued, “The arts (literature) have to be fimly reserved from the practiced subject from the concerns of academic study and vocation training. Artists create icon and the principal upon which they conduct their work has to be free. Assessment is a managerial main striking. It is anathema to art and must to vigorously to say “in this connection we shall not go very far” he suggests until we have fully understand the particular compulsion, our students are under, for many students grasping the concepts of arts, is as grasping adequate the concept of person and education for appreciation being there. All these among others are the controversial issues which this research project intends to find out solution to in view of factors responsible for poor performances in literature in English in Nigeria’s secondary schools, particular reference to Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

Statement of Problem

The problem under discussion is that most learners that offer the subject (literature in English) perform poorly at the end of it all. And the need to ameliorate the situation or trend. While there is the problem of mother tongue, here are still numerous issues which further compound the problem under review. There are methodological and pedagogical constraints with view to enhancing and enabling curriculum of study.

There are other fundamental issues apart from language distance such as incongruous in curriculum frame work to b prevalent social milieu, teaching method learning atmosphere structural and institutional roles all of which are problems responsible for poor performance of students in literature in English in our secondary schools.
