AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE EFFECTS OF INDISCIPLINE IN SOME SELECTED PRIMARY SCHOOLS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

In the past, many Nigerians both literate and illiterate have been expressing their opinion on the fall in the standard of education in schools.

There have been various discussions on the subject and many factors have been attributed to the fall in educational standard of pupils, and one of such factors is indiscipline among pupils with the root firmly established in primary schools.

Government (both past and present) have promulgated various decrees against offences like examination malpractice which includes cheating during examination, leakages of examination papers, penalties as severe as twenty one years imprisonment has been laid down by the provision of the decree against examination malpractice.

Indiscipline among primary school pupils could be termed behavioural problems. Most of the symptoms of behavioural problems are initially manifested by certain children in their home environment. In support of this Baker (2010) started: ‘‘the symptoms of conduct disorders most often start within the family groups’’. It is very apparent that these problems are some of the factors that the child brings into the schools mainly from their homes. This is not to say that behavioural problem in some children may not start in the schools.

Even when symptoms are manifested in such a setting, they are usually due to difficulties within the family, thought, a few observational studies on behavioural problems in children have been carried out; all have shown that there is an increased prevalence of behavioural problems, within  the school in present day Nigeria (Nwagwu, 2008). There have been various Newspaper publications that came up with screaming heading as: “falling moral standards, show of shame at the bar beach’’ All these ought to give parents and guardians food for thought in the upbringing of children
