INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
Education of the western came into Nigeria when Thomas birch freemen, the half caste English missionary landed in badagry on September 24, 1842, within a few weeks of his arrival in badagry he opened a primary school. The church missionary society came four years later, also to badagray and opened their schools.
The two objectives of the early missionaries of all school instructions are to impact knowledge, saving the soul to fit for practical usefulness in life.
According to (Onabemiron 2000) popular primary education naturally gave rise to popular secondary school education. (the first grammar school in Nigeria was the C.M.S Grammar school in Lagos, 1859. The Methodist Boys’ High School 1878, St Gregory’s College in 1891 and Baptist academy in 1895. as the government could not stem the tide, and even despaired of the prospects of regulating their standard it established its own secondary school the kings college in Lagos in 1909, which it hoped and serve as a model in shafting equipment and quality of teaching. Their products would acquire the all important West African school certificate that will give its holders admission to higher institutions of learning.
English language in Nigeria as of today performs a dual role with our educational system, one as a subjects of study and the other as a medium of expression for the study in the other school subjects. This no doubt explains for the study in the other school subjects. This no doubt explains the important and enviable position of the language in the educational academic life of any student in Nigeria. It goes without gainsaying so therefore a student should be well armed with a sound knowledge of the language to be able to cope effectively with the demands of understanding the other subjects he or she offers.
