THE LANGUAGE OF FEMINISM AND ITS IMPACT TO THE SOCIETY

THE LANGUAGE OF FEMINISM AND ITS IMPACT TO THE SOCIETY

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Feminism is derived from the word “femina” which means woman. Therefore, it will be pertinent to state that feminism is women-oriented and concentrates on issues that concerns women. It is a literary movement that tends to bring about a change in the society especially on how women are treated; it tries to discourage discrimination and humiliation on women; it focuses its attention on emancipation of women. Lots of emphasis has been made on feminism and its stand in the African novel. Women are often relegated to the background and decisions made by men without their consent. Most African novels present female characters as sex objects, inferior beings, and those who must obey the rules made by men. Feminism has been described as having many faces based on the fact that it varies with circumstances surrounding it which can be cultural or historical. Whatever stands one takes, it will revolve around the gap between men and women.

Feminism is mainly a western concept. In human history, women’s existence is observed through male point of view as a result of which women are always considered as secondary. Feminism comes into existence through the struggle for women’s right against the injustice carried out in the society. Feminism involves two important aspects of intellectual commitment and political movement that lead to justice for women and ends in sexism in all forms. According to Deborah Madsen, “feminism deals with women and their status in society and asks questions about oppression, consciousness and gender”. Madsen further states that the concerns of feminist theory are “the unique experience of women in history; the notion of female consciousness; the definition of gender that limit and oppress; and the cause of women’s liberation from those restrictions” (200). Feminism involves different aspects related to women’s rights in the society such as political, social and economical. These rights allotment provides them a means of participation in politics, business and legal matters that help them to get recognition and build up power in the society. It also covers all aspects of women’s rights.

Statement of the Problem

Men in Africa make women understand that they, the men are the head of the family that is, they are uperior to women. They see women as being weak and as a result, women have no say in the activities of the community. They have no rights and are subjugated to do whatever he want them to do especially in Africa. Women are made to feel inferior and this breed some sort of oil feelings in women.

This may be because of the basic assumption that “a women’s place is in the kitchen”. In other words, her home duties and family responsibilities should be her sole priority, thereby underling her active participation in national development in general.

Another assumption militating against female participation is that, female is biologically not designed for energy exerting and hazardous occupation. This argument may not be true because, with the age of automation and revolution in decision making intellectual ability counts more than physical energy.

The issue of gender bias too, contributes enormously to the low participation of women in several organization. Beverly’ (1995), notes that the society assumes that women should be mothers, school teachers, hairdressers, secretaries, nurse, maids and social workers only, therefore, they do not need education not to talk of taking part in decision making. This believe is wrong, as both men and women need and can purse groups and projects in development, each in their own unique ways, alongside each other.
