CHALLENGES OF OLD AGE IN URBAN AREAS OF ONDO STATE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

A day old baby will one day become an old man therefore growing old is an inevitable phenomenon, though feeling old is not.  In the past older people were expected to behave in what society had decided was an appropriate behavior for an old person.  It was believed that older peoples needs, feelings and behavior should confirm to what society perceived as old.  According to Wallace 1974 Aging is a natural process in which a common set of etiologies is responsible for the change that occur in each part of the body.  Today society do not condemn the old people as much as before society is more supportive and because of this, older people can live fuller, more enjoyable, independent lives provided they had good health, supportive relatives or friends and sufficient money for their up keeps.

Old people can continue to grow through formal and informal learning for example participation in community organization and religious activities.

These can be done to keep them active.  Engaging in productive activity can fill many fundamental needs of older ones.  This will provide a service of fulfilment.
