ACCEPTABILITY OF A UNIFIED SCHOOL UNIFORM FOR PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ STUDENTS IN EKITI STATE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

It is a known fact that, uniform has been the basic recognition tool of any organization and serves as a symbol of identity under the emblem of such organization. This could be seen in the Navy, Army, Civil defence, Police, Medical practitioners- Doctors and Nurses and Schools among others. Public discourse surrounding Education reform has focused recently on the importance of uniform policies in Public Schools especially in State of Ekiti. Public School administrators are beginning to consider uniform policies to improve the overall School environment and students’ physical enhancement. Because of the controversial nature of mandatory School uniform policies, those Educators who advocate the proposed reform, as well as those who condemn it are speaking out; Uniform advocates present several argument, they contend that, uniforms affect students’ safety by, lowering student victimization, decreasing gang activities, fights and differentiating strangers from Schools in School buildings and surroundings. (Kennedy and Loesch, 1995).

Not only this, uniform identifies students as well as a particular School in a community. It also gives students sense of belonging to a particular School. School uniforms thereby, can increase student’s population in a School, if the uniforms are well designed with beautiful colours or otherwise could decrease student’s population if the uniforms are not accepted by the parents or guardians. Also, School uniforms provide a measure for help, security, defence and solidarity. School uniforms serve as measure for defence and security among School mates, if a student is in danger; his/her mates can come to the student’s aid by rescuing the individual student from such danger.

Public Schools in State of Ekiti are graded into three (3) levels; we have the Elementary {Ages 6-9 (grades 1-4)}, the Middle {Ages 10-14 (grades 5-9)} and High Schools {Ages 15-17 (grades 10-12)}. The state of Ekiti’s unified uniform which equates students of same grade levels that also distinguishes students of different grade levels from one another is made compulsory for students to wear in the public Schools irrespective of student’s age, sex, colour, tribe, race, ethnic, cultural background of the pupils, religion, socio-economic background of the parents, political affiliation of parents, and so on. Hence, the rationale behind the use of a unified uniform in State of Ekiti may perhaps be hinged on such background.

Statement of the Problem

Over the years, different School uniforms have been the prime identity of any Primary or Secondary School in State of Ekiti, excluding Tertiary Schools, which distinguish Schools from one another and give students sense of belonging to a particular School. School uniform also gives pride, unity and as well as create a platform for identification of a particular School located in a given community. Now, that the State of Ekiti Government has made it compulsory for all public Schools to wear a unified uniform which is devoid of uniqueness to any School, this study therefore, seeks to address its acceptability among the public Secondary School students in Ikere Local Government Area Office of State of Ekiti
