AN APPRAISAL OF THE USE OF TENSE AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS. A CASE STUDY OF ADO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EKITI STATE.

ABSTRACT

The main force of this research work was to find out the usage of tenses of English among senior secondary school in ado local government area of Ekiti state. A composition titled “An important day in my life” was given to the student to write ten lines on within a limited time of thirty minutes in five selected schools in the local government. A fifteen item of questionnaire designed by the researcher was administered on sixteen (16) teachers of English language. A fifteen item questionnaire was given to the student from selected schools, to be freely to. Oral interview was also conducted. The study reveals that there were no enough teachers to teach English language in the schools. Students were not having textbooks and were not exposed to oral English. It was discovered that there were more female English teachers than male teachers. This is the evidence that people are not having interest in the job due to its low standard of salaries and other incentives. Therefore, some recommendations were made on the basis of the findings from the study.

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background of the Study

Tenses are words that indicate the types of action performed in sentences. It is a very important aspect of grammar. Therefore, the competency and efficiency in the use of English language glossy depends on the mastery of the use of tenses, one knows whether a state is past or present. There are also other forms of tenses such as; the perfect, continuous and future tenses. Tenses also have the singular and plural forms and the need for them to agree with the nouns is very important. The infinite verbs are also very important and worth of mentioning for the special way its uses take in tenses of English language looking at the use of tense generally by student especially the senior secondary students, it seems very difficult and complicated for them to be efficient in its usage Charles (1973) ‘studies of child and languages development declares: ‘verb system is one of the most complicated part of English grammar’.

Viewing the important position which English language takes in our society today, it seems highly necessary to develop the child toward s the usage of the tenses I the correct form even though the differences are widely spread, nevertheless necessary solution needed to be sought for so as to make the children capable of meeting the standard expected of them as tenses is concerned. When the standard is not, the children will be able to lift their heads up in any gathering most especially academic gathering in as much as English language is an official language of our country.

English language has gained much popularity nation wide in all aspects of human activities such as religious. Economics and politics. Therefore the youths of today who are the adults of tomorrow needed to have good foundation for the betterment of tomorrow as the effective usage of tenses is concerned.

1.2     Purpose of Study

This research was intended to find out why senior secondary schools’ students in ado local government area of Ekiti state performed poorly in the use of tenses in English grammar which has led to their poor performances in the internal and  external examinations undertaken by them.
