CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
One of the vices ravaging Nigerian society today is indiscipline. More often than not, we read in the pages of our daily newspapers and. also wittiness in some cases how school children perpetrate, various acts of indiscipline ranging from drug addition, drunkenness, smoking, stealing, Cultism, moral laxity to truancy, lateness, sexual misconduct resulting in unwanted pregnancy, abortion, dishonesty, wickedness, looting, vandalism, rioting, examination malpractice and lot more.
The prevalence of these problems of indiscipline has been agitating the minds of the government (federal, state and local), school authorities, organization, patents and quadrants. Hence, if urgent and appropriate panaceas are not adopted to solving these problems without any iota of doubt, its adverse effect on our secondary school students on who Nigeria’s future depends and the society at large-will be grievous. It is therefore important, that positive and meaningful solution be proffer to the problemsof indiscipline among our student today and society as a whole. This work of research is hence dedicated to the management of indiscipline among the secondary school students and outcome of the research will help all concerned bodies in the training of these words.
Stoop (2007) is of the opinion that we can only find lasting solution when we know the root cause of child s misbehavior. Punishment often used by most school authorities to solve discipline problem is a momentary help, not a permanent solution and does not deal with the source of the disciplinary problems in the classroom, for instance, if a child steals a biro in the classroom, it is most likely that the parents of such a child has failed to buy a pen for him or her.
