THE DECLINE IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL ENROLOMENT FOR GEOGRAPHY IN EKITI STATE. A CASE STUDY OF EKITI WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Geography is one of the tradition and earliest subject in the school curriculum. Geography is also one of the most interesting subject in school, especially when it is properly taught.

In addition, when the first university was established in Nigeria in 1948, geography was one of the pioneering subject taught in the university.

The long history of geography being taught in school is because of its immense important to the development of the individual in particular and the country in general.

Since man is a curios being always wanting to know more about his vast domain and the position the earth occupies in the immensity of space, it is only geography of all subjects that can give him a picture of the world around him and explanation of it which meets the exigencies of a life, the horizon of him is almost limitless.

Talking about the importance of geography Fairgrieve (1937) has this to say “the function of geography is to train future citizen to imagine accurately the condition of the great world stage and so to help to think samely about political and social problem in the world around.

Furthermore, Okurotifa (1977) list some of the major objectives of geography teaching which makes it important and indispensable in the curriculum of schools, some of the objectives include;

To develop in student the ability to do critical thinking and considering the relationship between diverse facts by looking for sides of a problem and by the usual geographical processes of observing, recording and analyzing conclude and generalizing.

To provide students with a body of geography knowledge which is interesting useful in everyday life and adequate for the school certificate geography examination.

To develop in the students a “geographical imagination” which is the ability to visualize with the mind’s eye what condition would be like in place to which he has never been.

To establish in students, by means of fieldwork, the habits of observation and lively attention to what goes on around him.

Despite the long history of geography being taught at all levels of education institution in Nigeria and the lofty objective, there has however been in recents past evidence to support the view that geography is on the decline in terms of its popularity among students writings the senior secondary school examination.

It is therefore thus declining trend in enrolment for senior secondary geography that the researches is now examine in relation to some schools in Ekiti West Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

Administratively, Ekiti West Local Government area is one of the sixteen Local Government in Ekiti State. It was created in the year 1978, the Local Government is one of the Local Government that makes up the Ekiti central federal constituency. The major towns that makes up the Local government are Aramoko, Okemesi, Ido Ile, Eriiyan, Ikogosi, Erio and Ipole iloro.
