INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Opeola (1984) ‘‘the essence of teaching in any teaching – learning environment is toensure that effective learning on the part of student is achieved. High rate of students’performance in turn is as a result of effective learning’’. The teaching-learning process may not improve if areas that constitute problems are not identified and reviewed. These areas that constitute problems lead to learning difficulties. This in turn affect students’ performance in the examination. Difficulties to learning could be in form of various factors such as -: Cultural background of learners, inability of the pupils to adjust emotionally, lack of good health and motivation, inadequate learning activities i.e. problem of choosing appropriate content which is made up of facts, concepts and generalizations. Secondly, the method and techniques that are being employed in the instructional process this problem could also be as a result of selecting relevant and inappropriate learning method in the teaching-learning process.

According to Hornby (1962), resources can be definedas something which helpin doing something. Resources could mean capability in adapting means to ends or in meeting difficulties. Agun (1988) suggested that the use of library is a source of instructional materials since it is no longer concerned mainly with keeping of books but pictures, film ships recording, coloured pictures, stenographs and maps.

Adeboyeje and Afolabi (1991) assert that learning resource are crucial issues which must be carefully examine by the teachers, depending on the form of learning resources, the teacher must determine whether such resource will be used on individual or group basis, since poorly organized learning resources can cause disorderliness in the classroom, the teacher must organize the resource in such a way it will enhance optional learning.
