THE EFFECT OF N.P.K (15-15-15) FERTILIZER APPLICATION ON THE GROWTH PERFORMANCE, NODULATION AND NUTRIENT UPTAKE OF CASSIA NODOSA.

ABSTRACT

This study emphasized the importance and the effects of NPK (15:15:15) fertilizer application on the early growth, dry matter yield, nodulation and nutrient uptake of cassio nodosa. Three levels (0,50 and 100kg/ha) of fertilizer were used. The results showed that leguminous plant performed better of the lower fertilizer level (50kg/ha) than the higher rate of 100kg/ha. Plant height increased by 32% at this fertilizer level. Dry matter yield and nutrient uptake were also best at the 50kg/ha rate of fertilizer application.

The study concludes that by the use of NPK 15:15:15, the production of cassia nodosa will be on the high increase since is the major source of  herb cocaly and otherwise for curing fever other related diseases .

INTRODUCTION

Leguminous tree species play a great in soil fertility restoration in the tropical rain forest regions during natural fallows. This is accomplished in several ways including biomass production/leaf litter deposition on forest floors, nitrogen fixation, sloughing off of underground plants parts etc. until recently research into leguminous plants was scanty.

Early work on legume research concentrated much on grain legume. The importance/usefulness of tree legumes is however, now being appreciated (Brewbaker et al, 1982; Sprent, 1986; and Faria et al, 1989).

Legumes of the Cassia genus are believed to have a high biomass production (Huang and Zheng, 1989; Bhatt and Todaria, 1991) and their leaves may serve as nutrient sources (Ezenwa and Alasiri, 1991. most of the studies involving Cassia plants have concentrated on species such as Cassia slamea, Cassia fistula and Cassia renigera and very few of these studies have examined the environmental factors that may influence growth of these legumes. This study was therefore carried out to investigate how the application of NPK (15-15-15) fertilizer to the soil environment will effect growth, dry matter production, nureient uptake and nodilation in Cassia nodosa
