GENDER COMPOSITION OF UNDERGRADUATE’S STUDENT ENROLMENT INTO TECHNICAL EDUCATION

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

In nearly all the state and federal Tertiary Institution offering technical course in Nigeria. One can observe imbalance in the standard of enrolment into technical oriented courses, the reason for this cannot be attributed to the management of the institution alone but also to the society, parent and individual which has heavy weight in the choice of course to study in college, polytechnics and universities. This led to imbalance in the number of male and female’s student that enroll for technology / Engineering programme in colleges, polytechnics and Universities.

The highest percentage of enrolment into technical course of male and female enrolment is at the lowest percentage compare to other course like pure education, art, social sciences and pure sciences. Gender inequality is a common problem for national development as it affects every area of the economy. There is need for immediate action to be taken to correct the imbalance in enrolment by introducing the enrolment of female and male on a 50-50 basis at the colleges, polytechnics and universities. Therefore, our effort to become an industrialized technology advanced country and also to reduce the continuous dependency on transfer of technology would be achieved through balance of enrolment of student into Technical Education based on their interest, aptitude, perception and conviction not to favour  a particular gender group. The problem which is universal in Nigeria colleges of Education is the low enrolment of female student in technical courses; this study is aimed at investigating why enrolment of female student is at the lowest percentage compare to that of the male in technical education as at affect National development.
