THE ECONOMICS IMPACT OF THRIFT AND CREDIT COOPERATIVE SOCIETIES ON SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN OSUN STATE

SECTION ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Cooperative as a specialized field of economics activities has come to be seen as an avenue of improving economically the life of the members.

At the inception, cooperative appears to be a social self organization that assisted members in the time of need.  In Nigeria, there are few cooperative banks.  Catering for the financial needs of the cooperative thrift and credit societies.

At the time of creation of Osun state, there were four active cooperative thrift and credit societies in Ile – Ife.  At that time, economic and social activities were low.

It become clear that lack of functional or active cooperative societies in the state created a set back towards economic and social growth.  The need for the formation of cooperative thrift and credit society among secondary school teachers became apparent.  Teachers need money to meet their economic and social needs in the state and they could not go to money lenders to secure loans as a result of the high rate of interest charged by the lenders.

The secondary school teacher in Ile – Ife came to realize the disadvantage of waiting for bank loans with the high rate interest, at this period when prices of goods and commodities keep on rising

Thus the impact of cooperative thrift and credit society among secondary school teachers in Osun State with particular reference to Ile – Ife cannot be over emphasized.  Today, all schools, ministries and parastatals including private establishments have started their own cooperative thrift and credit societies.
