INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
Indiscipline as it is called is fast becoming a phenomenon which has eaten deep into the fabric of the society today. Concerted efforts must be made at all levels to check it, if the level of development in the society must be increased. In fact, there is no gain saying to the assertion that “discipline builds a virtuous nation and indiscipline conversely wreck it”.
In all developed nations of the world therefore, the secret behind their achievement among all others, has being the formulation and inculcation of positive values directed towards the general discipline of the citizens.
Indiscipline as a concept has no generally accepted definition. It has been viewed differently by various authors Hornsby’s Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of current English (1980) defined “indiscipline” as absence of discipline|. To be able to drive home the concept of this research work, one may then ask “What is discipline?” Again, Hornsby (1980) gives us five definitions. It is training of the mind and character to produce self – control and habits of obedience etc. school discipline it is the result of such training order kept (e.g. among school children soldiers)” It is a “set of rules for conduct method by which training may be given” It is synonymous with punishment”. Finally discipline could be a branch of knowledge subject of instruction” (pp. 224 column 2).
A vivid consideration of the fire definitions as given by Hornsby shows that the first which deals essentially with the concept of school discipline is the most relevant to this study. Thus, from definitions of “indiscipline” and “discipline” by Hornsby, one can assume that “indiscipline” is a behavioural transgression emanating from the formation of such vices by an individual or groups of individual insulting ultimately in the absence of especially of the mind and character to produce self control obedience and the desired habits.
Furthermore, the general view of indiscipline in Nigerian perspective are those behaviours or disposition that are termed as being anti – social. They are anti – social because they are not in conformity with the ideals and are hence contrary to the acceptable normal conducts of individuals or group of individuals in the society.
It is probably then, that in the realization of the impact of indiscipline in our society that the National Orientation Agency (NAO) was launched in 1994.
Apart from the government, eminent people noticed this problem in the daily times of October 28 1992, the vice chancellor of University of Lagos called on the Nation to see indiscipline behaviour in the higher institution as a tool for violating rules and regulations.
In the Guardian paper of September 3, 1989, the Governor of Bauchi State also reported the awareness of the so – called indiscipline. The minister for education Prof. Aliu Babatunde Fafunwa expressed the same view on indiscipline during his address at the 25th Anniversary of the Federal Government College Warri in 1991. He said the parent teacher Association should continue to assist in impacting indiscipline in their wards. This is evidence that indiscipline exist in the higher institutions and secondary schools in Nigeria and that it need to be curbed by parents, teachers and that Nigeria government. It is for this reason that the researcher wishes to find out the causes and possibly the management of indiscipline problems among the secondary school pupils in Ekiti State.
Statement of the Problem
The problem of this study is finding the causes of indiscipline among students in the secondary schools in Ekiti State, hence to proffer possible solution to the management of the cause of indiscipline prevails and things voluntarily work the normal way among the citizens. The acts of indiscipline therefore need to be curbed in our society and even among students in the secondary schools in Ekiti State in order to make things work the normal way.
Therefore, questions such as the following needs to be answered. Are the male student more involved in the causes of indiscipline than the female student in Ekiti State. Is there any significant differences in the way sex difference influence indiscipline among the secondary schools students government to teachers such as regular payment of salaries in Ekiti State.
