AN INVESTIGATION INTO SPORT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN TERTIARY INSTITUTION

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background To The Study

Intercollegiate sports competition was initiated by the students of United States of America in the 19th century in a variety of sports under the direction of the students. The survival of the programme came through the relentless and undaunted efforts of students who took upon themselves to act as captains, coaches, team officials as well as undertook the supply of equipment and uniforms to their teams. As the importance of the programme grew, parents, alumni or friends contributed to the purchase of equipment and uniforms (Ladani, 2007). The incorporation of sports into the educational programmes of American collegiate institutions eventually formed the basis for the emergence of intercollegiate sports which was adopted in Nigeria today by tertiary institutions such as colleges of education, polytechnics and universities (Venkateswarlu, 2000).

Amuche (2000) stated that inter collegiate sports are sponsored among tertiary institutions in a number of different sports and which are organized and controlled by the college or university authorities for selected individual or teams or universities. Similarly, 1 st level is intramural sports organised while 2nd level is interscholastics and the 3rd level is intercollegiate. Adeyanju (1998) described inter collegiate sports as the third and highest level of sports programme conducted among Nigeria Colleges Of Education (NICEGA,) Nigeria Polytechnics Games (NIPOGA) and Nigeria Universities Games(NUGA). According to her It provides competition at the highest levels for the highly skilled student in the various sporting activities that are available in the college or university. In corroboration with Awosika (1993) Adeyanju (1998) supported the claim that inter collegiate sports are highly organized competitions that involve top class athletes.

Statement Of The Problem

Adesoye (1989) reported that some of the tertiary institutions in Nigeria could not stand the test against their counterparts in terms of their sports management practices in achieving 6 tangible results and in harnessing their resources for productive purposes and that sports management practices that will enhance adequate performance should be put in place in the tertiary institutions. There are research works on sports management in Nigeria and others countries, however, to the best of the researchers knowledge, he has not come across any research work to compare the various sport management practices among tertiary institutions in Nigeria It is a common knowledge that many of these tertiary institutions do not feature prominently in the collegiate sports competitions, thus hampering the realization of the aims and objectives of inter collegiate sports program in such institutions.
