INFLUENCE OF MOTHERS’ EMPLOYMENT STATUS ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS

INFLUENCE OF MOTHERS’ EMPLOYMENT STATUS ON THE ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Traditionally, a woman is seen as the person who is in charge of performing all
the household tasks, whether employed or unemployed. Most employed wives or mothers as dual career persons wake up very early, do some household tasks, go to the office or work outside the home, come back to continue with the household task, care for the children and husband then go to bed late at night. Employed wives as defined by Lerner(2001) are those who work for pay any time during the week, that includes the 12th day of the month or who worked unpaid for fifteen hours or more in a family-operated enterprise. Unemployed wives are those who are temporarily absent fromtheir regular jobs because of illness, vacation, industrial dispute or similar reasons, also unemployed wives are full – time housewives who are not doing any paid job, but are carrying out household tasks that are expected.

Employed wives are those gainfully employed fifteen or more hours per week. And the unemployed wives are either not gainfully employed or employed less than fifteen hours per week (Strober and Weinberg, 2004)

Maternal employment can have various effects, both positive and negative on the
academic performance of students. Ruhn opined that maternal employment has a negative effect on student‟s academic performance in their early teenage years. He further stated that factors that may contribute to these negative effects are: income, educational level ofparents and other demographic variables, such as age, marital status, and occupation. The way in which these factors interact with maternal employment may affect the academic performance of students. In addition, the economic status of a family also seems to have effect on the student‟s academic performance. Employed mothers who are educated have a good reason to make their children‟s education to be of high standard but the unemployed who are not educated, might not think of ways to impact on their children‟s education.

Statement of the Problem
In Nigeria, education is a crucial issue. Most families make sure that at least they
attain it to a certain level, to have a sense of belonging. The children‟s education starts
from the home. Therefore, the importance of a child‟s educational achievement is very
important to the family, and the role of a mother as the key actor in the child‟s life
cannot be overemphasized. However, the scourge of socio – economic conditions such
as: way of living, children‟s education, welfare, shelter, the father whose earnings is not
enough will not be able to cater for such needs.
