EFFECT OF ESSAY WRITING ON SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN IKERE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EKITI STATE
Background of the study
English language in Nigeria serves as the official language, second language as well as the medium of instruction and communication in educational institutions. Its valuable position is attested to by the requirements set by various examination bodies that English has to be passed at credit level before a candidate is admitted to most Nigerian tertiary institutions. For the reasons that English language in Nigerian is a second language which is acquired after the mother tongue, there are bound to be peculiarities in the syntactic, lexical, and semantic level of the language use. It is also pertinent to note that the English language has what we call formal and informal varieties that are, the written and the spoken form. In the written form, formal rules are applied strictly while in the spoken form which is largely informal, these rules are not obligatory. The Nigerian English does not differentiate between formal and informal usage in speech, but keeps strictly to the formal in writing. From the various varieties of English discussed above, The Nigerian students who is a second language learner is confused or ignorant on which to use. The students might choose to use that variety which he/she is exposed to or that which is commonly used.
Statement of the problem
This is a wide spread feeling that the standard of English language is rapidly a great problem to the educationalists especially specialist teacher of English language. the students find it difficult to use English language as a medium of expression in many social gatherings or for their academic purposes, they make a lot of grammatical mistakes when speaking or writing English which could be as a result of shortage of specialist teachers in the educational system which cannot be over emphasized. The successful implementation of the curriculum in each of the school subject which depend to a large extent on availability of specialist teachers in the English has led to employment of graduates from other disciplines such as history or economics to teach English language in some secondary schools. This constitutes a serious problem to the writing of essays among the secondary school students. Since the most important factor in the teaching learning process is the teacher, there is a great need to train more teachers in teaching English language. Therefore, the present study is taking up to syntactically analyse essays at secondary school level. It has been observed that some students don’t perform better in essay writing, that is why this study is out to solve the problems.
