EFFECT OF ACCOUNTING TEACHERS QUALIFICATION ON STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN EXTERNAL EXAMINATION

EFFECT OF ACCOUNTING TEACHERS QUALIFICATION ON STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN EXTERNAL EXAMINATION

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the study

Accounting plays a number of roles in the socio-economic, political and cultural development of Nigeria society. (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, 2010) Accounting is an indispensable tool for entrepreneurship in any of the vocational skill. Hence, it is an element of business education and business education itself is a component of vocational education (V. E.) Osuala (2011) described vocational education as including such areas as Agricultural, Business, Health Occupations, Industrial/Technical and Home Economics.

A successful career in vocational education can only be guaranteed by a proper and accurate keeping of financial records. Whatever affects the effective development of vocational education affects the economic development of any such nation. Vocational education prepares people for occupations requiring manipulative skills. Indeed, it is designed to develop skills, knowledge, abilities, attitudes and work habits needed for self-sufficiency (Azikiwe, 2008). It is basically occupation oriented because it is essentially intended to provide skills and manpower for commerce and industry in any nation.

The continued slide in the performance of students in the Accounting in external examinations is a course for great concern not only for the teachers but also for all stake holders in the business of education. This is more worrisome when one considers the fact that Accounting doubles as a medium of instruction in Nigerian schools as well as our Business Education. The central role of accounting cannot, therefore, be wished away.

The pattern of failure has, however, shown that the incidence appears to be higher in some schools than it is with other schools. A number of factors have been linked to the courses but more relevant is the issue of qualification of the teachers. This is more important because in the business of teaching and learning, teachers offer only what they know about the course; you cannot offer what you don’t know.

The qualification of teachers involved in teaching and learning has great roles in the performance of students and it is to find out these effects that this study is set out to accomplish.

Account is something, which is important in business. The question of who should teach Accounting effectively must be qualified. The search for a worthwhile answer has formed the basis of the topic of this project.“The effects of the qualification of Accounting teachers on the performance of secondary school students in external examinations, in selected secondary schools in Ikere Local Government”.

Statement of the Problems

It is assumed that only those who have professional training in accounting teaching should teach accounting. The Accounting teacher should be the one whose competence and proficiency in all the teaching skills are in a good measure. But especially in written and calculation, is not deficient. The Accounting teacher should have a good knowledge of both theory and calculation aspect of Accounting.

In Nigeria today, most students in secondary schools and infact even in universities lack the ability to perform efficiently in Accounting, both theory and calculation aspect of it.

Adekunle (2011) “maintains that it is in putting down their ideas on paper in calculation aspect that most secondary school and university students have greatest difficulty”. This situation has not changed over the years. This is still the major problem faced by Accounting students today. It is therefore important to find out if the qualification of the Accounting teachers has any effect on the performance of the students in Accounting.
