IMPACT OF TEACHERS QUALIFICATION AS CORRELATES OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF BIOLOGY STUDENTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOL IN OWO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ONDO STATE
BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Science had been of great importance worldwide for suitable an socio – economic development as well as for technological advancement of the nations.
Knowledge of science education is therefore required in all countries globally due to the numerous challenges that are facing them. Science in the secondary schools is taught through two main categories as basic of the basic secondary and the separate science subjects, as chemistry, physics and biology of the senior secondary. (Gesinde 2000).
It is however worrisome to note that there is low achievement in secondary school science (Onwuakpa and Nweke, 2000).
We have in a world of science and technology throughout our lives, human beings encounter issues and problems that have their root in science.
Science and technology have become critical factors of economic and social development.
Through science resources of nature have been well utilized and transformed into meaningful resources for a better living in the world. The tremendous emerging trends in science education have assured man of a comfortable living within the society.
Biology as the science of life is offered in all senior secondary schools in the Nigeria which attracts the greatest percentage of both science oriented and arts banded student (Nwosu, 2006).
Urevbu (1990) pointed out that the teaching of biology is important because it equips the student to comprehend the world around them and equip them with the necessary skills to build progressive society.
Similarly, Nwosu (2005) observed that biology provides a platform for teaching students to develop the ability to apply science concept and principle in solving everyday life problems.
With knowledge explosion all over the world via the internet, biological knowledge has also expanded. There are advances record in filed such as biochemistry, physiology, ecology, genetics and molecular biology that have made the subject a central focus in most human activities including problems like food scarcity, pollution, population, radiation, disease, health hygiene, family life, management and consideration of natural life, management and conservation of natural resources as well as biotechnology and ethics.
Akinsolu (2010) assert that availability of qualified teaches determined the performance of student in schools. Wirth & Perkins (2013) indicate that teachers attitude contributed significantly to student attention in classrooms where as Adesoji & Olatunbosun (2008 illustrates that students attitude was related to teachers characteristics.
This therefore meant that teachers attitude directly affected student attitude on teachers personality, Adu and Olatunde (2007) contended that teachers qualifications or characteristic are strong determinants of students performance in secondary schools.
Qualifications of teachers play an important role in teaching but professional education or training is more important in teaching, because a trained teacher can teach better than a un – trained teacher.
Generally, it is claimed that a trained teacher knows well how to teach effectively. It is very common fact, if a trained teacher teaches the students; the performance of the student is good because in the process of education the teacher is considered the most crucial element. Adaramola and Obomanu (2011)
There is a direct relationship between the qualification of the teacher and the performance of the student besides other factors.
Effective teaching is necessary for effective learning. Different educationist explained about effective teaching in their own way.
Effective teaching is a mode that problem inquiring, considering and seeking out of the correct or incorrect result and ability I teaching it is just like plugging in the field for the sake of good crop mode of effective teaching is a function of a large number of variables e.g standards of teaching, what you like to teach , what do you want your student to learn, how much time is available and what is the frame of teaching. Adeyemi (2010)
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The present studies intend to determine the qualification of teachers as correlates of academic achievement of biology student in senior secondary schools.
Teacher qualification will determine the success of student in biology, if the teacher is not well trained it will be seen in the performance of the student.
