Background to the Study
Creativity is an invisible asset which when adequately utilized has the capacity of making an individual economically vibrant and when well harnessed by a nation ensures her irreproachable development. Creativity has utmost relativity with Fine and Applied Arts, a field that is devoid of plagiarism. According to Uzoagba (1978), “art is a human conception made manifest by the skillful use of a medium.” He goes ahead to opine that it signifies a doing, a making, a fashioning or putting together, which is accomplished by human skill. Besides, Ogumor (1993) states that, “art is the ability and desire of man to improve upon the world by modifying and adding to nature.” Fine and Applied Arts is a discipline that its immense benefit towards national development cannot be over emphasized. Art is an innate endowment bestowed onto man which unfolds his creative ingenuity and ensures his comfortability in life. On the other hand, according to Ocho (2002), “education is a process through which man realizes his potentialities and uses same for self-fulfillment in the service of himself and others.” This realization of one’s potentials does not come through dreaming. It manifests through formal and informal teaching and learning. Based on this, education entails the activities of nurturing an individual which lead to the manifestation of his true self for the purpose of making him useful in the society. This is to say that education helps in bringing one out of one’s shell so that one can function as a productive creature. Education is a sphere of life that any nation that admires development must not toy with. Encyclopedia American (1995) defines education as any process by which individual gains knowledge, insight, develops attitude or skill. A nation’s approach to education determines to a large extent the level of development such nation will witness. Education enlightens the citizens of a nation, reduces parasitic pattern of living and encourages self-reliance.
