1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Biology is one of the science subject taught in senior secondary schools. Biology as a school subject is the study of life. The study of Biology helps the students to understand their body system, conversation of the environment the natural resources and also prepares students for higher studies. Biology is believed to have the widest scope when compared to other subjects, it is related to other science subject such as mathematics as in Biometrics, Physics as in Biophysics, Geography as in Biogeography, Chemistry as in Biochemistry and so on.
In the teaching and learning of Biology, the use of instructional materials can not be ruled out. Effective teaching and learning of this subject depend greatly on the adequacy, relevance and effective use and management of instructional materials. Biology is one of the practice oriented subjects; therefore the use of instructional materials in passing instruction to students should be embraced in order to make the teaching and learning process of the subject more meaningful, practical, real and fruitful.
Instructional materials as resources that tend to increase student interest in learning’s, in promoting greater acquisition of knowledge and longer retention of knowledge. Instructional materials are indispensable to the teaching and learning process. It is an integral part of a trained teacher in making the abstract become concrete, complex become simple and the unknown become known.
Most schools still have problems of non availability of instructional materials but one could probe the extent of efforts put up by Biology teachers in improvising some of the instructional materials and creatively using them in the teaching & learning process. The reason for this study is to explore the effect of improvisation, utilization and management of instructional materials on the performance of the students and its impact on Biology teaching in secondary schools.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
It is necessary at this stage of educational advancement to think of how fast the Biology teacher can improvise, utilize and manage instructional materials to teach science subjects. This is because, It is believed that the use of instructional materials in teaching Biology does not only enhance easy learning but also has a stimulating influence on the learner and which invariably would make positive contribution to the learners’ achievements.
Since many of these instructional materials are sophisticated resources which are not easy to come by, it will therefore be of great value to investigate the extent to which Biology teachers can improvise, utilize and manage instructional materials for the effective teaching and learning of Biology in secondary schools.
