CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Explosive population growth in our society is of great concern to the Nigeria Government because it has gone to the extent that the provision of social infrastructures does not meet that of population growth.

To arrest this problem, government has been making public campaigns over the mass media such as radio, television, newspapers, journal etc. that every woman in Nigeria should not have more than four children at most. This is the reason giving allowances for a maximum of four children in our tax relief form to every taxable adult.

But the continue increase in the population growth in the society does not indicate that the public announcement, debates and lecture on family planning would provide a lasting solution to the problem. Also, the general view of woman in our society that modern technique of family planning are delicate and at the same time harmful needs urgent attention and investigation.

This study is aware of other factors which may cause rapid population growth in our society.

However the attitudes of woman towards the modern techniques of family planning in our society seems to be of prime importance in increasing population growth in our country.  While the problem of rapid population growth universal problem.  As Adetola (1985) has observed that the issue of explosure population growth in our society is not peculiar to any particular socio – cultural group in the society but a national menace and problem of developing countries in general.

Therefore an investigation of this problem through researching into attitudes of woman towards the modern technique of family planning in our society is likely to yield laudable achievement as through empirical investigation has harelly been directed at solving explosure population growth issue.

Adetola stated further that some woman may not morally or religiously agree to the use of family planning control strategies.  That according to the woman, children are regarded as God’s gift to any person and so, it is unreligious of any body to hinder.  The birth of these gifts deliberately such woman through that all the techniques can permanently destroy womens fertility, even the safe periods which nature has designed is regarded as sin because it conflict with moral and religious norms.

Some men also believe that all family techniques are, bad and does not conform with traditional beliefs. They view it as a means of legalizing adultery in the society. These men do not see any sense in applying any of the techniques for the fact that might explore this to engage in illicit dealings outside their marital homes.

This little picture of what the society is simply suggests that, what is lacking is the awareness of the appropriate family planning control strategies which will not only be appropriate but reliable cheap and adequate but free from any side effects. Since family planning involves children by choice not by chance, many women in Ese – Odo local government are had more than the number of children they can cater for. Therefore, many were sent to be appreciates of various trades including koranic school where they learn about Quran only. This trend of events led to reduction of secondary school population.

Beside, some of these secondary schools are on the verge of been closed down because of the number of indigenes entering secondary schools have reduced drastically due to the financial constraint on the parts of the parents. The history of family can be traced to the 1930s.

Adewole, (1984), asserted that it was not until the early 1930s that adequate knowledge of the menstunal cycle was pieced together so that a couple could understand when, during the cycle, sexual intercourse was most likely to result into pregnancy.  This family planning came to lime light as a phenomenon of 1960s when the service was rendered by voluntary and private agencies, some methods of birth control was described independently in the early 1930s by KNAUS in Australia and by OGINO in Japan.  This led to research in basic hormonal interrelationship which led to attempts to alter the patterns in order to control fertility.

In the early 1960s birth control pills were introduced.  At this same time, family planning was introduced to Nigeria because of the involvement of the World Health Organization (WHO) which was sponsored by professor J.O. Ojo the then Head of Department of Gynaecology and Obstetric Department of University College Hospital Ibadan.

By August 1970, there were thirty (30) experimenting clinics in Nigeria Ten of these were located in Lagos, six in Ibadan and others were sparsely located in other parts of the federation.

These clinics were attached to a medical institution like Hospitals, maternity Homes or children Health centres.  By March 1972, the number increased to double the existing ones; for example, 84 hospitals Health or maternity centres and clinics offer assistance in family planning.  As a result, there is gradual awareness and acceptance of family planning.
