Background to the Study
The quality of secondary education is deteriorating as a result of poor treatment meted to teachers among others. Teachers are subjected to bureaucratic rules and regulations and their conditions of service are merely decided by the authorities without consents, this is not like other professions.
Teachers are very important in any system of education. No proper education can ever be achieved without an adequately trained and motivated teaching staff. In order to receive optimum results from teachers, their satisfaction is of utmost importance. However, assuring teachers satisfaction is not an easy task given that human beings needs cannot be fully satisfied as the satisfaction of one needs leads to the desire for another higher level need (Adelabu, 2005). Therefore, teacher’s world overseen not to be satisfied, not even in developed countries. Thus the case of teachers in Ondo West Local Government District is not an exception.
The practices of teachers are very vital function in the educational development of any nation and society. Teachers are seen as a group of key and vital body of professionals for a nation’s development.
School administrator, despite the title is teachers.
They work in a condition that their job satisfaction matters a lot. People vary in their needs in the work place. The extent to which the school administrators are satisfied with the job is a potential indicator of their commitment to their responsibilities to their responsibilities, managerial effectiveness and motivation. If there is a poor relationship between and among persons, environment and job characteristics their maybe problem with their behaviors at work.
The Nigeria Policy on Education (NPE, 2014) was clear on the need and importance of a well motivated teaching force, but was also very clear on the role and functions of school administration and the vital function that the school administrators will play in the overall achievement of the national goals via education. A lot is expected of them in respect of bringing about the effectiveness of the system in all the thirty six states of the Nigeria Federation.
These roles and functions of the school administrators are broad in their scope, nature as well as the extent of linkages in them.
The school administrators in all ramifications are expected to function within the defined network of relationships in order to strive to attain the much desired success in their schools. This does not however preclude the possibility of problems challenges and other obstacles that may march the effective functioning of the school administrators.
Statement of the Problem
In ideal situation, all employees, teachers included should enjoy performing their duties each day and retire to their homes with an eagerness of seeing the next day so as to go back to their jobs.
This is because such workers have no reservations on their jobs hence they give their all. It is however observed that in Nigeria as indeed with most developing countries most teachers are not satisfied with their jobs.
The situation is even worse in Ondo State as the quality of education offered is seriously compromised by the demoralized and reduced work force. If the situation is not arrested, the consequences will be grave and will adversely affect performance of teachers this reasons that the study seeks to establish the level of job satisfaction on productivity among secondary school teachers in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
