FACTORS AFFECTING MARITAL STABILITY AMONG COUPLES IN IKERE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EKITI STATE

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Differences in culture and relationship that exist between man and women have made many researchers to observe many influence manifestation happening and occurrence in marriage stability within the African society Nigerian, Ikere Ekiti. These manifestation and occurrence have significant impact on marriage within the African modern society, impacts have been both positive and negative.  GOVE (1986) described marriage as the state of being united with a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife. The mutual relation of the husband and wife, the Institution whereby men and women are joined in a special kind of social and illegal dependence for the purpose of founding and maintaining a family; an acts of marrying or rite by which married statues is affected from a societal level of analysis the Institution of marriage represents all the behaviors, norms, roles, expectations, and values that are associated with legal union of a man and woman.

For most people, getting married and having children are the principal life events that mark the passage into mature adulthood.  Marriage is considered to respect a lifelong commitment by two people to each other.

However, the researcher observed the awareness of an average couples about marital stability is much higher than it was about a decade ago. The connection between the notion of romantic love and the social aspirations of the educated young married couples (Kabwegyere, 1992). He cited field works conducted by some authors especially in Ghana and reported that the connection largely explains the contemporary popularity of monogamous marriages. However, despite the positive effect, the recent observation hade shown; there had been increase in number of factors that are seriously threatening stability of marriage. Most of this factors are traceable to some inherited behavior and thinking from the ancient African society and imported ideas from other sources that are beyond the Africa concept of marriage. These factors are the significant causes of marital stability in modern African society; as a result of their functions and effect within a home. Young African now considered most educational status, beauty or handsomeness and religious involvement as necessary conditions to decide their marriage partner (Kolapo & Aiyetan, 2005).

It was further noted that very often, some parents do not want their daughters to associate with men until they are engaged. Also a man will not marry his fiance until she is pregnant. This is a security against the restriction of ordinance marriage of infertility. He noted that since traditional norms continues to influence and regulate the extra familial relationship of a husband and wife, the organization of modern marriage generally involves a segregation of rules between the spouse.

It was observed that West African marital behaviours shows close semblance to the British family organization in that usefulness and very existence. Kolapo and Aiyetan (2005) attributed the high rate of divorce to inadequate length of courtship before marriage, dissimilarities between spouses in social and economic characteristics such as social class, ethnicity religion ad age. Other causes include sterility, adultery, desertion, personality, income and excessive cruelty as well as default in remitting the family practices also sexual satisfaction as a determinant of marital stability among couples. Also sexual dysfunction as one of the determinant of marital stability among couples. Sexual dysfunction is described as a disturbance in or pain during intercourse or any of the sexual response cycle (Olakunle, 2003). She explained further that the problem is more difficult to diagnose and treat in women than it is in men because of the intricacy of the female response cycle.

Healthy marital sexuality serves the positive function of creating shared pleasure reinforcing the relationship attachment and reducing the related to the stresses of life and marriage. Sexual dysfunction among couples lack the “inoculating effect” of healthy marital sexuality, they may likely end in divorce than marriage in which sexual desire is healthy (James, 2005). Almost, in the same vein boating, reported his observation that evidence gathered shows that personality, family background and ethnic origin which were of considerable importance in traditional marriage practice have been replaced by love and affection between partners (Ardayfio-Schandof, 2009).

Ardayfio-Schandof (2009) claimed that in spite of its indispensability, marriage has been beset by many problems that have threatened its usefulness and very existence. He attributed the high rates of divorce among couples with different family background. The exchange of marital ideas gave rise to the modern concept of marriage in Africa society, the exchange of ideas and value of marriage lead to a rich thinking and multiplication of ideas that depicts equality of marriage (Fatile & Animasahun, 2011).

Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate factors influencing marital stability among couples in Ikere local government area of Ekiti state.
