This research was designed to investigate the effects of bride price on marriage. The data for this study was collected from the twelve villages in Okeluse. One hundred and seventy questionnaires were distributed amongst literate couples in the areas mentioned above. This study show convincing evidence that high bride price has many effects on marriage such as delay in marriage in sound marriage, encouraging, elopement separation, divorce, prostitution, illegitimate children among others. It was discovered that if parents could demand a minimal amount of bride price it would encourage most people who have become prostitutes, bachelors/spinsters or divorces to marry, so it has concluded that high bride price contributed to the problems high lighted above which adversely affected the marital status of the individual. It was also found that bride price gives stability and respect to the home of couples and to the children. It bestows the status of legitimacy and accorded social recognitions. In view of the above results the researcher made some useful suggestions which need to be looked into. Finally the government has been called upon to organize marriage seminars and extend its Home Economics Extension Programme to the people of Okeluse.




Background of the Study

Bride price plays a significant social role in Okeluse Traditional Marriage system.

(Hartury 1982) states that bride prices is the transfers of a substantial consideration in the form of livestock, goods or money from the groom or his relations to the kinsmen of the bride. Price is the opposite of the dowry and is used in societies in which the woman is an economics asset, contributing to the family’s income by her skills and labour (Loyis 1972).

The payment of bride price gives the husband exclusive sexual rights and claims to the domestic services of his wife. To the wife, it gives the rights to economic support for herself and children. It also brings the two families together however normal procedure for witnessing and sealing the transaction may be publicized by wedding feast.

A successful marriage is based on a number of factors, some of the factors may be based love, mutual trust, self discipline and respect by on both parties. However, bride price has some effects on marriage and these effects may be categorized into individual and social factors.

This study will clarify some of the effects it has in Okeluse and possibly suggest ways to overcome some of the effects.

Statement of the Problem

It has been observed that bride price posses some problems in our families such problem include late marriage or refusal by individuals to marry at all, so the researcher want to know these effects.
