PROBLEMS OF TEACHING RESOURCES IN SOCIAL STUDIES AT THE POST PRIMARY SCHOOL LEVEL IN EKITI EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EKITI STATE OF NIGERIA

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

As a subject, social study is relatively new in the curriculum of schools in the country (both primary and secondary schools).

Apart from this the status of the subject is yet to be properly established in the curriculum of senior secondary school as it is only presently being study an examinable subject in the primary and junior secondary schools.

While some see the subject as an amalgamation of the existing social science subjects. Others see it as a discipline that stands on its own and which deserves a place of its own in the curricula of the schools.

However, this discipline has some problems in its teaching learning processes one of such problems is that of teaching resources to be used by the teachers.

Most social studies teachers in post primary schools don’t know the type of teaching resources to use   in their teaching of this level of education, because the

subject, “social studies” is recently introduced into the junior secondary school curriculum.

According to Obilo et al (1985), “teaching resources are those resources used for easy understanding of students in the teaching and learning of social studies in the classroom setting”.

In all, teaching resources are those aids to involve the student’s attention and to promote quick understanding of a particular subject or topic.

In view of this, it is envisage that teachers will realize that the effectiveness of classroom instruction significantly depends upon realizing the role of teaching resources.

Secondly, some teachers feel that social studies can be taught without teaching resources.

Such teachers throughout the whole school years of about forty weeks. Come to class and simply talk and talk without involving the students in any of the classroom activities and without involving the students in any of the use of teaching resources.

Furthermore, it is also pertinent to add that, the modern trend in education is to view teaching resources from the perspective of providing direct purposeful experience for the learner’s and the teaching of social studies in secondary schools in Nigeria

 Statement of the problem

The obvious results of failure to use teaching resources are that the task of teaching and learning of social studies is made difficult. The students and even the teachers find it uneasy. Hence the students, loose interest in the subject, thereby causing mass failure and lower pass mark in the subject.

It is therefore the researcher’s intention to examine the problems of teaching resources in social studies at the post primary schools level in Ekiti East local Government Area of Ekiti State.
