1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
According to Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary the home refers to a place where one lives, while environment refers to surrounding or condition a person lives.
The influence of the home environment on the academic performance of pupils has recently been a point of concern of both parents, teachers and educators. It has been given consideration because of its importance on the scope of educational development of children. The home environment is seen as one of the factors that influence the academic performance of the children. Therefore, the home environment is given attention with regards to the academic performance of the children.
This study is based on the fact that the environmental factors influencing the academic performances of children are highlighted, looked into, assessed and proper recommendation made.
The family background of the children is given due consideration as it affects the children’s development. The nature of child rearing, influences of both the peer group, playmates and family are also considered.
There are many problems associated with children from different home background or environment and such problems differ from one environment to another.
It has been observed that children from poor background or illiterate home have either the problem of not understanding or speaking English. Their interaction with others is different they are always slow in understanding and mixing with other children.
In the case of children from educated background there is progress in their academic performance because the home environment is one of the best determinants of the child academic growth. On the other hand, children from enlightened environment generally speak English as soon as they start to talk. Their reaction to things is better.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to bring into light what influences the home situation or environment has on the academic performance of the children.
It should be noted however, that this case study is not meant to be of singular use either to the children concerned or the teachers’ but is also hoped that it will open ways to other researcher s’ for the educational development of children in Ekiti- State.
