Background of the Study
English language, without being ambiguous, is like any other language in the words, viz: Igbo, Yoruba, Edo, Kanuri, etc. Language itself is a group of graphic representation of the noise used systematically by member of a speech community for the purpose of communication. It can also be seen as a conventional system of communication in which vocal sounds are organized and utilized. Hence, English Language is a language of the English people. It is now a language of so many people in the world, including Nigeria; this means that English Language is the Language of wider community (LWC). These essential things after the acquisition of a language are to be skillful in such language.
It has been observed over the years that learning, understand and using English Language well in our senior secondary school has not been up to standard. And over the years it has been noticed that the degree of competence and performance is rather falling, many factors are now responsible for this, and these factors are multi-dimensional in nature. They include among others the inherent features of the English Language; the individual concern, the influence of the first language (L1) acquired upon the second language (L2) which is the English language and the environmental factors.
A close observation shows that the standard of learning and language usage in Nigeria school is falling, mostly in the Senior Secondary Schools; the case could be traced to the very beginning of awareness with the language. The problem are further compounded by the fact that English Language is a foreign language there is also the tendency for learners to look at the English Language as the most abstract and unintelligible set of laws to be understand by the superior race and people only. This view of course is self defeated and it is part of the factor that informed this study, because the tendency only discourage and dampens the spirit of spirit of learners. Observation have equally shown that, for some years, student have been performing poorly in English Language in their final examination in senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, the reason for this may be that the foundation in English Language is weak.
