THE IMPERATIVE OF ART AND ADORNMENT IN THE

Abstract

All creative activities begin in the minds, the eyes and ears of the artists.  A work of art that does not communicate meaning, is still in born.  Art then is a two – way process involving both the creator and the re-creators, it plays his part in the creative act by learning the visual verbal and auditory vocabularies that make communication possible and that distinguish the tinnier delicates difference in visual art forms.

This paper focuses on the imperative of art and Adornment in the Enhancement of Tourism in Africa society.  The study stresses the definition of Arts, Tourisms and Adornment according to some scholars and emphasy was laid on scarification, jewelry, textile art among others.  Weapons regalia and objects denoting special importance in the society were analyzed.  Recommendation and conclusion are made to open up new knowledge for cultural heritage.

INTRODUCTION

With the formal introduction of art as a subject in the primary and secondary schools in Nigeria by the pioneer art teachers, to be précised. Championed by late Onabolu in the early 1920’s, many Nigerian students were opportune to study art in various art schools in Nigeria and abroad.  This creative exploration was fueled and facilitated because of the arrival of K.C Murray, a European art teacher in 1927 on the request and appeal of Onabolu.  By 1930s and 1940s, Onabolu and Murray had produced and influenced notable artists and art teachers.

Some of these artists and art teachers are Ben Enwonwu, Ibrahim, Akinola Lasekan, Udo ema, Adam Joshua, SAO Geoffrey Okolo and others.  Even then there are many Nigeria artists and art teachers who emerged as creative explorers and revolutionists in the late 1950s and 1960s as a products of the Nigerian College of Arts Science and Technology which was at first in Ibadan before relocated to Zaira in 1955.

However some aspect of Yoruba traditional art and culture remain as they were and they so remain not merely because they are more rooted in the environment but also because of the socio – economic problems and religious beliefs involved in effecting a permanent degree of stability.  Example could be drawn from the desire to beautify one’s body which men acquires early in life is not less keen in the Fulani nomads despite their hard and unsettled mode of life.  That they pay attention to their personal decoration is evident not only in the ways they bedeck their bodies but also from the mirror which is sewn into a leather wallet.

However the traditional art education taught various skills which included so before art and culture could be well recognized or popularly known in the nation or society, it must involve people’s participation and also there would involve transportion by using land, sea and air as a result of people participation in the culture, their would be exchange of good and services which will can now referred to as ‘tourism’.  So in this paper we are going to see what we mean by tourism, Art and Adornment as well as the role of Art and Adornment in the society.

Conceptual Framework

The role of art, as one is prepared for his functions in the society, is remarkable, in education, people learn to grow up as useful members in the society.  As art is often considered as the highest form of human expression, then it is of great importance in education for the individual to fit in the society.  Considering material ends, art provides for the commercial fashion to advertise, promote and sell variety of products Ajayi (1985) stresses that Art plays a meaningful role in the developing and changing a dynamic children who becomes increasingly aware of himself and his environment.

Uzoagba (1982:3) defines art as a human conception made manifest by the skillful use of a medium.  It signifies a doing, a fashioning, or a putting together (construction) and it usually implies that the thing is accomplished by human skill.  Dr Johnson in Uzoagba (1982:3) also defines art as ‘the power of doing something which is not taught by nature or by instinct.  So every human being has the power to create things so that he/she can represent, express, and communicate his/her ideas thoughts, feelings, experience and values.  The power to create so developed in us can be expressed as music, dance, drama, Fine and Applied Arts as products of our cultural creativity.  This is why music, drama, fine and applied arts are collectively called ‘cultural and creative art as Ogunmola (2006), Dennis (1983) view that, existence of a work of art relates to life as it emerged from the product it has been produced.  In this creative process it is required that artist must search for symbols which present the radical elements through which specific purposes for actualization and development could be met.

However traditional artist imitate neither reality imagination but reproduces what he observes at the same time emanated from naturalistic to abstraction to meet the modern civilization Marjorie (1995) see art as a living expression, and empowered and empowering voice of contemporary society, urging and mounding society as well as reflecting it.  As students exposed to the culture as by drawing thing related to their environment this would eventually open them to their vicinity.  That is the reason which lowenfeld and Britain (1975) opine that creativity is thought or as being constructive, productive behaviour that can be seen in action or accomplishment.  It does not have to be a unique phenomenon in the world, but it does have to be basically a contribution from the individual.  Jackson (1965) stresses that “one goal of general art education is to develop educated adults capable of choosing, directing and enjoying full life benefits” from the definition it shows that fine and applied art develop a total man and society.

The knowledge about tourism can not be left out when one is stresses the movement of people from one place to another when we are making reference to culture and art; in that tourism varies from source to source, person to person.  There no consensus concerning the definition of tourism.  Nearly every each institution have different views when it is to explain the terms.  UNWFO (2009) observes that tourism is the act of travel and visiting places, independently for the purpose, which include private travel for holiday and recreation purposes but also business travel like selling of art works and others.

Tourist are people who are traveling to and staying in place outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive years for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited.  An artist that involve in tourism is a person who goes to another place for private interest or who is sent there for example by a company or institution but is not employed at this place.  Business tourist like an artist may go there for a conference, a workshop or further their education.  These are the art surveillance they may be there to sell some of their products or there for an adventure, recreation, education pilgrimage or other purposes.

In addition educational tourism which is the main focus for enhancement of the tour or leisure activity includes another country to learn about their culture (norms, value and aspiration).  In such that exchange programme and study tour or to work and apply skills learned inside the classroom in a different environment.

Wikipedia (2011) therefore emphasis on the creative tourism as tourism related to the active participation of travelers in the culture of the host community, through interactive workshops and informal learning experience. So learning through workshop and seminars are effective in education system through the enhancement of tourism.
