A random collection and compilation of some medicinal plants commonly consumed on the cognitive functioning of student in selected tertiary institution in Ekiti State, Nigeria in the current study was carried out from a period of three months. The medicinal plants were subjected to digestion in chemistry laboratory, FUTA central research laboratory and Atomic absorption spectrophometer (AAS) was used to determines the level of some phytochemicals on the medicinal plants (pawpaw leaf, akintola leaf, bitter leaf, dogoyaro leaf, garlic, sunflower) the analysis shows that alkaloid is present in the medicinal plants and arranged as follows: Sunflower (7.34), Moringa leaf (5.01), akintola leaf (0.561), dogoyaro leaf (0.844), bitter leaf (0.012), pawpaw leaf (26.69) and garlic (2.56) in all respectively. Alkaloid concentration in all medicinal plants analysis in pawpaw leaf were above the permissible limit set by FAO/WHO while bitter leaf is below the safe limits as set by WHO/FAO.
Phytochemical are chemical compounds that occur naturally in plants (Phyto means “plant” in Greek) some are responsible for color and other organolepthic properties quoted by the (American heritage medical dictionary 2004 to 2007) that phytochemical the active chemical components or constituents, present in a plant that account for its medicinal properties.
(Mosby’s Medical Dictionary 9th edition 2009 Elsevier) A chemical of plant origin, such as sulforaphane from cruciferous vegetables, alicin from garlic and onion, imonene from citrus fruits, isoflavones from beans, and ellagic acid from grapes. Phytochemicals may be useful for certain diseases (e.g in chemoprevention of malignancy) of immune stimulation e.t.c.
(“CITE”-Segen’s Medical Dictinoary 2012 Farlex) A biologically active but non-nutrient substance found in plants includes antioxidants and phytosterols synonym (s): bioactive;non-nutrient; phyto-protectant. (“CITE” Collins V.A. 2005) There may be as many as 4, 000 different phytochemicals.
Phytochemicals as candidate nutriens without specific knowledge of their cellular actions or mechanisms, phytochemicals have been considered possible drugs for millennina.
(“CITE”-Gale Encyclopedia o medicine: copyright 2008) Phytochemical medicinally active chemical constituents derived from plant. There are almost 2,000 different plant pigments in the foods we eat. Anthocyanins give strawberries, cherries and raspberries.
