EFFECTS OF CODE SWITCHING ON THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE AMONG THE SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN AMOYE GRAMMAR SCHOOL IKERE EKITI, EKITI STATE.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

English language is the official language of business transactions, as official language. It is used in the general and specific administration and in every aspect of ministries in the country.

According to Hibbi et al (1965), it is “the dress of thought”. Afolayan (1988) also described language as a code i.e. the symbol of representing things, concepts or thought. These two definitions simply mean, without and this will invariably make life worthless.

Following the nature of English language in the Nigeria context. The effect of code switching on the teaching and learning of English language especially in the in the senior secondary schools leaves much to be described. Students performances in English language have been very poor compared to their performance in other subjects’ areas as shown in the analysis of students’ performances in the previous years of sampled schools.

The major observations as regards the poor performances is that, there has been mastery of one language at the detriment, considering their tongue (MT) to be concerned in this work (English) as minor or inferior.

But having considered this fact, there is need for English language to be given serious consideration in our secondary schools; since students may continue to think (LI or MT) first language or mother tongue, he or she has found the equivalent in the L2 (English Language) for effective communication and also to achieve the education policy on English language has to be achieved objectively regarding the language role in the educational system in the country national policy on education (1977: 22-24).
