DETERMINANTS OF CAREER CHOICE IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN IKERE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EKITI STATE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

The choice of an occupation or career has been regarded as one of the major problems that most Nigerian secondary school students are confronted with. This is because choice of a career is hinged on a number of determinants which the individual sees to be crucial to job satisfaction and performance. These include the remuneration, the conditions of work, personal interest, the status of the job in the community and some determinants that have to do with personal characteristics. ^;

However, in some instances, the students simply enter into career, which they are inexperience, parents advise,    advice from friends relations or inadequate counsel from teachers. Such students thus end up unsatisfied and constitute a nuisance not only to themselves but also to their employers. It is therefore necessary to ensure that these youngsters enter into a career which they are interested in and will offer them the needed satisfaction.

It has been rightly pointed out that career decision or choice is approachable at various stages of life. Some people, especially adolescents, are faced with these problems at the entry point while it is becoming very clear that adults are faced with perhaps many problems in late life when further career decisions need be made.

In many developed countries career education is given a place of pride. Also in many third world countries especially Nigeria, career education has been recognized as a must for national development. The Federal Government of Nigeria, career education has been recognized as a must for national development. The Federal Government of Nigeria explicitly stated in the Third National Development Plan” 1975 that education is incomplete if the beneficiary does not have the expected feeling of self fulfillment which goes with the right choice of career.

The noticeable feeling of frustration among the nation’s young men and women is attributed to lack of career counseling. This implies that for a young man to have satisfaction, which follows successful efforts, he has to develop the ability to choose between alternatives occupations.
